The map is not the territory

"A good traveler has no fixed plans and is not intent on arriving." Lao Tzu

The original maps of the London Underground simply traced the layout of the city itself. Then, in 1931 the engineering draftsman Harry Beck had a revolutionary idea: he redesigned the map as a schematic diagram with stylized lines and regularly spaced stations.

"The map is not the territory", said Alfred Korzybski, founder of the theory of general semantics.
