The carnival

The person behind the mask is someone else, unrecognisable to others. Makeup breaks down social barriers. The most humble of men becomes a lord; the most powerful a fool. Men and women, young and old, all can give in to their desires and live out their fantasies with impunity.

The city merges, the authorities turn a blind eye, well aware that the disorder is subtly helping keep the peace. Around the world, carnivals have always played their part in helping safeguard social order.
